According to Ayurveda, strong immunity (bala) is a product of good digestion, strong agni (the metabolic fire), appropriate liver and endocrine functioning, and a healthy respiratory system. Immunity is also connected to a mysterious substance called ojas, often translated as vigor and strength. You can also think of it as your savings account, your body’s energy reserve.
So much of the mainstream focus during COVID-19 has been on “fighting” the virus, keeping the “enemy” at bay, isolating ourselves from each other, without even thinking about that as a living organism we only thrive in relationship to other organisms. We need this constant exchange with other humans, animals, plants, soil, air, bacteria, yeasts and viruses, to remain healthy and alive.
In one of the most famous Ayurvedic classical texts, the Charaka Samhita, it states clearly that if your terrain (your inner ecology) is healthy and strong, disease cannot take hold. So the focus of this 4-week immersion program is to strengthen our terrain, the geography of our bodies to make us as resilient, healthy and vibrant as possible, so that when we come in contact with any virus or bacteria, pollution or stressful events, our system is well equipped to handle it.
As a group, we will embark together on a journey of exploration: resetting our digestion, immunity and mental capacities; learning the basic principles of Ayurveda as it relates to doshas, daily and seasonal tuning; focusing on minimizing toxicity (ama), strengthening metabolism (agni), making herbal mixtures for optimal immune support during winter and rejuvenating the lungs and respiratory system.
